Tooth decay is caused when food and bacteria combined form plaque, not only on the tooth but the gum area as well. Plaque feeds on the sugars making an acid that; if left to sit on the teeth, will destroy enamel and cause decay.
Ways to help prevent tooth decay are to floss regularly, brush after meals, and visit your dentist regularly, oh and limit or try to eliminate snacks and other foods that are high in sugar from your diet.
Without taking preventative steps, you will most likely experience toothache and infection from the tooth decaying.
